Bericht von Milica, unserer internationalen Freiwilligen aus Serbien (englisch)

Volunteering at SCHIRM in the charming city of Halle has been a truly remarkable experience. As a facility that caters to socially disadvantaged young people and homeless youth, SCHIRM is a beacon of hope for those who have faced marginalization and labelling from society. With many of the users living on social transfer payments and having grown up outside of the parental household, SCHIRM aims to provide a safe and welcoming environment that offers necessities such as warm meals, laundry facilities, and showers. Moreover, the social workers at SCHIRM offer a listening ear, emotional support, and collaborate with the young people to create personalized plans for their future.

As a volunteer at SCHIRM, I was responsible for helping with the daily operations of the facility, providing assistance to the users, and working alongside the social workers to create tailored plans for the young people. The experience of working with the young people has been incredibly humbling and has taught me the power of empathy, patience, and understanding. Each individual I encountered had a unique story to tell, and it was a privilege to be able to listen and provide support to them.

However, the experience was not without its challenges. One of the most significant obstacles I faced was the language barrier. I was initially difficult to communicate with both the users and the local community effectively. But with time and practice, I was able to improve my language skills, break down communication barriers, and forge genuine connections with the young people.

Living in Halle has also been an exhilarating experience. Halle is a city steeped in history and culture, boasting of various architectural landmarks, museums, and galleries that are sure to leave you in awe. The city is renowned for its gorgeous botanical gardens, the bustling music and art scene, and the welcoming community that makes it easy to feel right at home.

In conclusion, my volunteering experience at SCHIRM and living in Halle have been nothing short of amazing. It has taught me invaluable life lessons, and my interactions with the young people have been nothing short of inspiring. It has opened my eyes to the importance of empathy, patience, and understanding, and has broadened my horizons, providing me with a deeper appreciation for the beauty of different cultures. The opportunity to work with and support the young people has been a humbling and rewarding experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of something so special.
